It was another hot day today but with a breeze.

Leaving Cammarata

Today was very similar to most of the others in that the day starts with a long descent from a hill town and then a big climb up to the next town.

Olive trees grow in harsh conditions.
Another long hot climb

As well as the normal figs I eat along the way, today I also came across a grape vine at the edge of an olive grove .The berries were small and a bit tart, but very refreshing .

One thing that was different about today was that the walk goes through a small town called Aquaviva Platani along the way. Up to now, there’s been none, meaning a picnic where I could find shade.

My dream come true – a beer at lunch

I saw a lot of fires today. The countryside is tinder dry.

The fires follow the lines of the previous wheat crop.

I ran into some firemen who told me all the fires had been deliberately lit.

Along the way there often wayside chapels . The tradition goes back to Roman times.

Finally I could see Sutera ahead, nestled against a giant rock outcrop. This seems to be typical of this part of Sicily.

Sutera is at the right of the rock.

The old part of Sutera is called Rabata, and was founded by the Arabs during their centuries of occupation, in around 860CE. It belongs to the ‘prettiest villages of Italy’ association.

A nice dinner and now time for bed. Another big day tomorrow .
